Men's Basketball Loses at Rutgers-Newark

Newark, N.J.— The John Jay men's basketball team lost on the road in an non conference affair on Saturday evening as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Rutgers-Newark University 98-56 at the Rutgers-Newark Golden Dome.

With the loss, John Jay is now 1-7 overall. The Bloodhounds were led by freshman Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) with 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting, while Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith)chipped in with 14. Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) added 10 for John Jay.

Rutgers-Newark raced out to a 14-2 lead 4:15 into the contest en route to leading from start to finish.

But John Jay hung around in the early stages of the contest. After falling behind by 12 early on, the Bloodhounds used a 9-2 run to move to within five points of the lead as John Jay trailed 16-11 with 13:09 to play capped by a continuation three point play by Mason.

But that was as close as John Jay would get as the Scarlet Raiders immediately took off with a 23-4 run over the next seven plus minutes and led 39-15 with 5:55 to play.

Both teams traded baskets for much of the way over the last several minutes of the first half and Rutgers-Newark led 51-27 at halftime.

Rutgers-Newark opened the second half on a 12-2 run to increase its lead to 63-29 with 17:09 left.

The Scarlet-Raiders maintained a comfortable distance the rest of the way, keeping a 30 plus point lead.

Up 86-53, Rutgers-Newark used an 8-0 run in the late stages of the second half to build its biggest lead of the night and the Scarlet Raiders led 94-53 with 2:53 to play en route to the win.

Rutgers-Newark was led by Greg Moore with a game-high 24 points, with 22 coming in the first half. Deshawn Singleton added 15 in the game.

The Scarlet-Raiders held a 44-31 rebounding edge. Jaeger led John Jay with nine rebounds. 

With his 14 points tonight, Mason upped his career total to 976, needing just 24 to reach 1,000 for his career.

John Jay returns to action on Tue. Dec. 29 for the opening round of the Car-Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament at Hampden-Sydney College. The Bloodhounds will face the host school at 5 p.m. Other schools in the tournament are Averett College and St. Mary's College (ranked 14th in the nation in the current D3hoops.com poll).
