New York, N.Y.— John Jay women's basketball was defeated by Rowan University 97-41 in a home contest on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, John Jay is now 0-6, while Rowan improves to 5-2 overall.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) with career-high 16 points and six assists, while
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) added 11.
Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) grabbed 14 rebounds.
The Bloodhounds had the lead for the first four minutes of the contest. But with John Jay up 7-6, the visiting Profs went on a 9-0 run to take a 15-7 lead.
Rowan, who shot 53.8 (35-for-65) percent in the contest, including 58.8 (20-for-34) percent in the first half, gradually pulled away. They outscored John Jay 7-0 over the final 2:37 of the first half to take their biggest lead of the half and the Profs led 59-24 at halftime.
Rowan opened the second half on an 18-0 run to complete a 25-0 total run to take a 77-24 lead en route to the win.
The Profs held a 50-16 advantage on points in the paint.
Rowan was led by
Amanda Jennings and
Gina Catanzariti with 15 points apiece to lead five Prof players in double-figures. Jennings grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for Rowan.
Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) had nine rebounds for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Dec. 12 at Rutgers-Newark University at 6 p.m.
