Men's Tennis Downs Lehman, Advnaces into Semifinals

Flushing, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s tennis team advanced into the semifinal round of the 2009 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) with a 5-3 win over Lehman College in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Bloodhounds will now face Hunter College on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the National Tennis Center with the winner earning a chance to play for the championship on Sunday against the winner of Thursday’s other semifinal round match between Baruch College and the College of Staten Island.

John Jay fell behind 2-1 after losing at first and third doubles. But the Bloodhounds won at second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles to secure the win. At number one singles, Dong Shao (Flushing, NY, Patchogue-Medford) battled to a no result after splitting the first two sets (6-4, 4-6). Josh Pagan (Douglaston, NY, Benjamin Cardozo)remained unbeaten in singles with a win at second flight (6-3, 6-2). He is now 10-0 this season.

At number six, Matt Hicks (Queens Village, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) had an easy score (6-1, 6-0), so to did Derrick Chung (San Diego, CA, Rancho Buena Vista) at number five (6-2, 6-0). Rogelio Gutierrez (Brooklyn, NY, Leon M. Goldstein)was a winner at number four (6-2, 6-4).
