Flushing, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team was defeated by Hunter College in the opening round of the 2009 City University of New York Athletic Conference softball tournament 8-0 at the Queens College Softball Complex on Friday.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds move into the loser’s bracket and will play at 3 p.m. against the loser between the other two teams in the tournament, Baruch College and the College of Staten Island.

The Bloodhounds were held to three hits and were led by Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) who was 2-for-3 with a double. Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Leadership Academy) got John Jay’s other hit, a lead off double in the fourth.

Hunter scored in every inning except for the second and took a 2-0 lead after one. Jacqueline Frank blasted a two run homer to left in the first to get Hunter out in front 2-0.

The Hawks capitalized on John Jay miscues in the third, fourth and fifth innings respectively with an unearned run in each frame to push the lead to 5-0 after five. The Bloodhounds committed three errors in the contest, one in each of those innings to help Hunter increase its lead.

Hunter College put the game away with two outs in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run walk off homer by Megan McKenna to give Hunter an 8-0 lead en route to the mercy rule win.

Hunter had eight hits in the contest and were led by lead off hitter Catherine Alves who was 3-for-3 with a run.

Stephanie Damroth picked up the win after going 6.0 innings and allowed no runs on three hits with six strikeouts. He walked no one.
