Women's Basketball Loses at the College of Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team lost on the road Wednesday evening as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the College of Staten island (CSI) 84-57 at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center.

John Jay was led by Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas)who had a double-double of 28 points (12-for-20 shooting) and 10 rebounds, while Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) added 12 points. Claire Prince (Wellington, FL, Summit Christian Academy) scored 10 to go along with seven rebounds. Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy)had a team-high 12 rebounds for John Jay.

The host Dolphins never trailed in the contest as CSI opened play on a 10-2 run and led by eight with just over three minutes gone by.

CSI maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the first half as they gradually increased their lead. The Dolphins led by 20 with 8:43 to go capping a 10-0 run that gave them a 30-10 lead.

CSI led by as much as 30 in the first half and were up 42-12 with just over five minutes remaining.

But the Bloodhounds cut into the lead in the latter moments of the first half and closed out the period on a 9-2 run, which included a pair of three point field goals by Prince and a continuation three point play by Lirio as John Jay went into halftime down 44-21.

CSI led by as much as 35 in the second half and were up 65-30 with 12:50 to play.

John Jay cut into the deficit and went on a 13-2 run to get to within 24 points of the lead and the Bloodhounds were down 67-43 with 8:24 left.

The Bloodhounds were within 19 points of the lead later in the half, but CSI maintained a comfortable lead before walking away with a 27 point win.

The Dolphins were led by Olivia Tierno with 21 points, while Katelyn Hepworth added 19 and a game-high 16 rebounds.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 22 at New York City Tech at 5 p.m.
