Men's Basketball Loses to Wilkes in Day Two of Wilkes-Barre Challenge

Wilkes-Barre, Pa.— The John Jay men's basketball team was defeated by Wilkes University 80-68 in day two of the Ramada Inn Wilkes-Barre Challenge hosted by King's College.

John Jay, now 1-11 this season, was led by Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with team-high's 15 points and 13 rebounds, while David Williams (Jamaica, NY, Martin Luther King) added 14. Ryan Olsen (Huntington, NY, St. John the Baptist) added nine points for the Bloodhounds.

The Colonels never trailed in the contest, and leading 9-8 with 15:45 to play, went on a 7-0 run to gain a 16-8 lead with 12:07 to play.

Wilkes continued to increase its lead in the early stages of the contest and went up by as much as 20 in the opening stanza. The Colonels took a 33-13 lead with 5:08 after capping an 8-0 run.

But John Jay did not go away and stayed within striking range in the final minutes of the first half.

After falling behind by 20, the Bloodhounds immediately closed the gap with an 8-0 run of their own to get to within 12 points of the lead, and John Jay was down 33-21 with 2:42 to play after a Mason lay-up.

The Bloodhounds then closed out the half outscoring Wilkes 9-4 over the final 3:05 to pull to within nine by halftime as John Jay was down 37-28 at the break.

John Jay kept the score close in the opening stages of the second half. The Bloodhounds narrowed the deficit to as little as seven twice, and John Jay trailed 49-42 with 15:22 to play after a lay-up by Williams.

But Wilkes responded with a 7-0 run to go back up by double figures and the Colonels led 56-42 with 12:41 to go.

John Jay never got back to within single digits of the lead the rest of the way. The Bloodhounds got to within 10 with 6:17 to go after a dunk by Mason which made the score 64-54.

But a 10-3 ensuing spurt by Wilkes gave the Colonels a 74-57 lead with 3:39 to play.

Wilkes eventually went back up by 20 and led 79-59 with 2:02 to play, putting the game out of reach.

John Jay closed out the game on a 9-1 run to get back to within 12, but time expired.

Wilkes had four players score in double figures and were led by Tom Kresge with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Kendall Hinze had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Wilkes shot 51.9 (28-for-54) percent from the floor in the contest, including 57.1 (16-for-28) percent in the first half.

John Jay is back in action on Wed. Jan. 6 at the City College of New York at 7 p.m.
