Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker at Home to CCNY

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s basketball team, after trailing by nine at halftime, outscored CCNY by 19 points over the first nine and a half minutes to take a 10-point lead, before it evaporated as the Bloodhounds fell in a heartbreaker at home to the Beavers 73-72. 

With the loss, John Jay is now 1-21 (1-10 CUNYAC), while CCNY is 7-15 (3-8 CUNYAC).
The Bloodhounds were led by Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica) had 13 points and 12 boards. Ryan Olsen (Huntington, NY, St. John the Baptist)added 15 points and Joseph Padell (Staten Island, NY, Tottenville) had 13. 

John Jay fell behind by as much as 13 in the first half as CCNY raced out to a 20-7 lead to start the contest. 

CCNY shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from the floor in the first half. But the Bloodhounds, behind eight offensive rebounds, outscored the Beavers 9-0 in second chance points in the first half to keep within distance as the Bloodhounds were down 40-31 at halftime. 

CCNY went up by 11 less than a minute into the second half. But John Jay took control of the contest from there. 

A two-handed dunk from the baseline by Mason ignited a 10-0 run in just over two minutes and the Bloodhounds were down a point at 42-41 with 16:46 left. A three point field goal by Olsen capped the run. 

The Beavers went back up by three for a moment, but Olsen knocked down another trifecta to tie the score. Then Padell followed suit with a three pointer and the Bloodhounds owned their first lead of the night and led 47-44 with 15:46 to go. 

Then, while leading by two at 51-49 with 13:11 to play, John Jay used another thrust, an 8-0 run, to go up by 10 with 10:31 to go. A breakaway lay-up by Padell capped the spurt and the Bloodhounds were in control with a 59-49 advantage.
 
Overall, John Jay outscored CCNY 28-9 over the first 9:29 of the second half. 

But CCNY hung around and kept within striking distance. They used an 8-0 run in just 1:03 and suddenly the Beavers were back to within two and they trailed 59-57 with 9:28 to play. John Jay committed four fouls and two turnovers in that time span. 

The Bloodhounds though held the lead and led by as much as six over the latter stages of the second half. They were still up a half dozen at 69-63 with 4:29 to go after a Desir lay-up, which proved to be the last field goal for the Bloodhounds as John Jay would close out the game going 0-for-3 from the field with three turnovers. 

But CCNY outscored the Bloodhounds 8-2 and tied the game at 71-71 with 1:37 to play. 

John Jay connected from the foul line with 41 seconds remaining to retake a one-point lead. But CCNY followed suit by going 1-for-2 from the line with 26 seconds left to tie the score again. 

The Bloodhounds, with the shot clock turned off, turned the ball over with just under 10 seconds remaining and CCNY’s Terance Johnston picked up the loose ball and was fouled with five seconds remaining. 

He connected on 1-of-2 to give CCNY the lead. 

John Jay, with no timeouts remaining, failed to get a good look at a buzzer shot as time expired. 

John Jay shot 50 percent (14-for-28) in the second half and outscored CCNY 5-2 in points off the bench. 

CCNY was led by Matas Rascius with 24 points and seven rebounds. 

John Jay is back in action on Mon. Feb. 8 at Ramapo College at 7:30 p.m.
