Women's Basketball Falls to CCNY in Conference Action

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team was defeated at home in conference action on Friday as the Bloodhounds lost to City University of New York Athletic Conference foe, City College of New York (CCNY) 73-53.

John Jay was led by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) and Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) with 18 points apiece, while Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy), Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) and Shantel Rodriguez (Rio Piedra, Puerto Rico, Franklin D. Roosevelt)had eight rebounds each.

The Bloodhounds scored the first four points of the game to take their only lead of the night and led 4-0.

CCNY countered by scoring the next six points and led 6-4 and the Beavers never trailed again.

CCNY built a large lead midway through the first half and while still up by four at 14-10 with 12:14 to play, went on a 14-0 run and led 28-10 with 8:52 left. The Beavers lead swelled to as much as 18 in the first half and led 30-12 to complete a 16-2 total run.

But CCNY went without a field goal over the final 5:56 of the first half and the Bloodhounds crawled back into the contest and got the deficit down to 12 before halftime as John Jay was down 35-23 at the break.

The Beavers held a double-digit lead the rest of the way in the second half and led by as much as 26 late in the second half before the final buzzer.

CCNY was led by Taryn VanEsselstyn with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Ashley Straughn added 16 points and 16 rebounds.

John Jay returns to action on Mon. Feb. 8 at Ramapo College at 5:30 p.m.
