New York, N.Y.— Fresh off its most successful season in many years, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice softball program had three players rewarded for fantastic seasons as junior catcher
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison) was named a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) first team All-Star, while fellow teammates
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant)and
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls)were named to the second team for the 2010 season.
Perez, a three year member of the Bloodhounds, was honored by CUNYAC for the second time in her career. After being named to the second team last season, she was named to the first team for the first time. Perez played a major factor in John Jay softball’s productive season and was a major factor in the Bloodhounds’ first ever conference playoff win since CUNYAC went to a double-elimination format in 2004. She batted a team-high .405, currently leads the conference in hits with 45. She ripped seven doubles, three triples, two homeruns and had 23 RBI. She tallied a team-high 64 total bases and had a .577 slugging percentage.
Chao, another three year player, was also honored by the conference for the second time in as many years. After making the first-team last season, she earned a spot on the second team after another outstanding season. She batted .394, tied for second in CUNYAC with 10 doubles and tied for CUNYAC’s lead in triples with six. She drove in 16 runs, amassed 61 total bases and registered a .616 slugging percentage.
Bonici, a perennial All-Star earned a spot on the second team after being a first team member the past three seasons. The four-year superstar earned the second-team honor despite missing a number of games due to a lengthy injury. In 22 of the team’s 34 games she batted .409 with seven doubles, two triples, 22 RBI, a .576 slugging percentage and tied for second on the team lead with 12 walks.
Bonici closed out her softball career at John Jay as arguably one of the greatest players in the program’s history. In 116 career games, she batted .404 (.147-for-339) with 93 runs, 19 doubles, nine triples, six homeruns and 101 RBI. She amassed 192 total bases and put up a .566 slugging percentage. She had an on-base average of .480 and was walked 50 times.
