Half Dozen Bloodhounds Earn Spot on CUNYAC Baseball All-Star Teams

New York, N.Y.— The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) has announced its All-Star teams for the 2010 baseball season and six members of John Jay have earned a spot as senior Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) has made the first team, while five others, including freshman pitcher Chris Camacho (Maspeth, NY, HS of Applied Communications), freshman second baseman Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys), junior first baseman Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational), freshman shortstop Dennis Lopez (Selden, NY, Newfield) and senior left fielder Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center)have been named to the second team.

It is the fifth consecutive season that at least six players have made all conference teams.

Hernandez makes the first team for the second year in a row. With two games remaining in 2010, the three-year lead-off hitter is batting .331, and leads CUNYAC with 47 runs, and has nine doubles, three triples, a team-high three homeruns, 27 RBI, 17 stolen bases and a team-high 78 total bases.

Camacho makes the second team after earning five wins this season and striking out 40 batters in 82 innings.

Catalano, who came within an eyelash of earning Rookie of the Year, was named CUNYAC’s Rookie of the Week three times during the season. He is batting .340 with 35 runs, nine doubles and 16 stolen bases.

Chavez leads the team with a .387 batting average, 10 doubles and 40 RBI.

Lopez has been spectacular with the glove this season, making numerous highlight reel plays. At the plate, he is batting .307 and leads the team with 19 stolen bases.

Perez makes all conference for the third time in as many seasons. He is batting .379 with 38 runs, a team-high seven triples and a .523 slugging percentage.
