Men's Cross Country Finishes Ninth of Twelve at Vassar Invitational

Poughkeepsie, N.Y.— The John Jay College men's cross country team opened its 2010 campaign with a ninth place finish of 12 schools at the Vassar College Invitational on a picture perfect 76 degree day along the Hudson Valley section of New York State.

Jessie Contrera (New York, NY, Newark Tech) was John Jay's top finisher, covering the six kilometer course in 23:22, good for 44th place overall of 100 runners. Fellow teammate Antonio Aguilar (Bronx, NY, Teaching and the Professions)was second fastest for John Jay, coming in 48th place in 23:28.

Newcomer Juan Corredor (Aberdeen, NJ, Matawan), in his first NCAA race, came home 54th overall in 23:51, while fellow first year runner, Gabriel Romero (Brooklyn, NY, Grover Cleveland) was 65th in 24:40. Teammate Mark Benjamin (Syracuse, NY, Corcoran)finished ten seconds behind Romero in 66th.

Host Vassar College won the meet with a total score of 28 points. John Jay had 221 points in the ninth place finish. Joe Gentsch from SUNY New Paltz was the individual winner in 19:50.

Up next for John Jay will be the Baruch College Invitational at the familiar confines of Van Cortlandt Park on Sun. Sept. 12 at 11 a.m.
